Experiment 3a: Linear Motion: There and Back

Scenario/Summary

To describe the motion of an object, you need to know where the object is relative to a reference point, how fast it is moving, and in what direction it is moving. A sonar ranging device, such as the PASCO Motion Sensor, uses pulses of ultrasound that reflect from an object to determine the position of the object. As the object moves, the change in its position is measured many times each second. The change in position (displacement) over time is expressed as a velocity (meters per second). The position measured from the sensor of an object at a particular time can be plotted on a graph. You can also graph the velocity of the object versus time. A graph is a mathematical picture of the motion of an object. For this reason, it is important to understand how to interpret a graph of position or velocity versus time. In this activity, you will plot graphs of motion in real time; that is, as the motion is happening. Interpreting these graphs will enable you to better understand distance, displacement, velocity, and speed.

In physics, we often use everyday terms but change the meaning to clarify the concepts. So distance or position is how far an object is from a reference point and displacement is how that position has changed. Speed and velocity are different. Speed (the rate of change of position with respect to time) is how fast you move. Velocity is both speed and direction. In this exercise, our reference point is the distance sensor. If you move away from the sensor, your velocity is positive, and if you move toward the sensor, your velocity is negative. If you move away from the sensor faster, your velocity is a larger positive number. If you move toward the sensor faster, your velocity is more negative.

The purpose of this laboratory is to learn how to relate distance-time and velocity-time graphs to the motions that they represent.

You will be measuring the motion of a cart with the motion sensor and making displacement-time, velocity-time, and acceleration-time graphs. Interpreting these graphs is an important step in learning about acceleration.

The purpose of this laboratory is to understand the meaning of acceleration, its magnitude, and its direction.
